My name is Paul Carbo and I am an almost-30-year-old, full-time, independent, freelance logo and web designer and developer residing and working from my home office located in the Philadelphia region of Pennsylvania. I have been designing for over ten years, and since I never went to college, I have been teaching myself along the way. I absolutely love what I do and hope to keep on doing it for a long time to come.
Whether I am working on projects, reading and responding to email, downloading and listening to music, reading and becoming frustrated with the news, or playing and hating the game Counter Strike, I admittedly spend a great portion of my time staring at a computer screen. I do try and have somewhat of a life outside of my office, though my ex-girlfriend would beg to differ. When the weather is nice I like being outside playing basketball or going on hikes. When the weather isn't so nice I like staying in watching movies, annoying my cats or reading a good book.
Almost subconsciously, my designs always end up conforming to a very similar look and feel. As much as I might try to broaden my range and think it's wise to stray from what I'm used to, this minimalistic approach is part of who I am as a person, not just a designer. I've learned that instead of deviating, to embrace it and make the most of it.
Paul Rand, undoubtedly the most influential designer of our time, is quoted as saying,
Simplicity is not the goal. It is the by-product of a good idea and modest expectations.
and these are my feelings exactly. I never set out to design the simple, it's something that just seems to happen on it's own.
However, try not to confuse simplicity with ingenuousness. Often times, what appears effortless and self-evident, was exactly the opposite during the creation process. It's qualities like these that prove just how great a design actually is.
I always say that there is one, perfect design out there for every project and it's up to the designer to figure out where it's at.
